The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is inviting families to kick off the new year by participating in a seasonal fishing tradition. “Trails to Trout” fishing days will be held on January 4 and January 10 at the Tyler Nature Center, offering a hands-on introduction to rainbow trout fishing for youth and adults alike.
TPWD will stock 900 rainbow trout in the center’s pond, with fishing hours set from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing gear and bait. Limited equipment and bait will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, and TPWD staff will be present to assist new anglers. Ice will be provided for those who choose to keep their catch.
After fishing, visitors can enjoy the natural surroundings by exploring the center’s hiking trails, rounding out the outdoor experience.
Recommended gear includes a light-action rod and reel, small hooks, light line (6 lb. test or less), and optional bobbers or split shot. Effective bait options include salmon eggs, corn, marshmallows, worms, or prepared trout bait. Rooster-tail spinners may also be used. Those planning to harvest trout should bring a stringer or small cooler.
TPWD plans to stock over 335,000 rainbow trout across Texas through early March. As trout are typically available only during the colder months, anglers are reminded to observe the daily bag limit of five.
