The Texas Historical Commission and Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site are inviting families to celebrate the holiday season at the place known as the “Birthplace of Texas.”

On Saturday, December 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., visitors can step into the newly recreated Hatfield’s Exchange in the historic Washington Townsite for a festive program blending history and tradition.

Highlights of the day include:

  • Seasonal drinks and recipes: Guests can sample mulled wassail such as Smoking Bishops, a drink famously mentioned in Charles Dickens’ Victorian-era writings.
  • Literary readings: Staff and volunteers will share passages from Dickens, bringing the spirit of 19th-century Christmas to life.
  • Period games and activities: Families can enjoy holiday games and customs that reflect the mid-1800s, offering a glimpse into how Texans of the era might have celebrated.

The event aims to immerse visitors in the atmosphere of the mid-19th century, combining history, literature, and holiday cheer.
