As Central Texas braces for a cold snap, the City of Killeen is reaffirming its commitment to community safety and comfort with its proactive warming center policy.
When Temperatures Dip Below Freezing The City of Killeen stands ready to open a warming center whenever the forecasted temperature or wind chill is expected to fall below 32 degrees. This decision is made as early as possible in coordination with the National Weather Service to ensure residents have time to prepare.
Even when a formal warming center isn’t activated, residents are welcome to seek shelter from the cold—or heat—inside City of Killeen buildings during regular business hours. These include City Hall, the Recreation Center, public libraries, and Police Headquarters. All visitors are expected to follow the city’s code of conduct while inside these facilities.
The City relies on the generosity and support of local organizations to operate warming and cooling centers. Churches, nonprofits, and community groups that are able to open their doors and provide volunteers during extreme weather events are encouraged to step forward. Interested organizations can contact the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management at (254) 501-7706 to coordinate efforts.
As temperatures fall, the City urges residents to check on neighbors, especially seniors and those without reliable heat. Bring pets indoors, protect outdoor plants and pipes, and stay informed through official city channels and by listening to KNCT and following MyKNCT.com.
