Central Texas residents are waking up to a weather rollercoaster this week, beginning with a sharp plunge in temperatures and ending with a hopeful hint of rain.
🥶 Freeze Warning Expanded
The National Weather Service has extended its Freeze Warning southward to include all remaining Central Texas counties. The warning is in effect from Sunday night into Monday morning, with temperatures expected to dip into the upper 20s and lower 30s—marking the coldest morning of the season so far. Residents are urged to take precautions: bundle up, bring pets indoors, and protect sensitive plants and outdoor plumbing.
🌬️ Chilly Start, Breezy Afternoon
Monday will remain cool and sunny, with highs in the 50s across the region and gusty winds reaching 15 to 20 mph by afternoon. Lows tonight will fall back into the 30s and low 40s. In the Austin and San Antonio areas, expect highs ranging from the upper 50s to upper 60s under clear skies.
🔥 Elevated Fire Danger Tuesday
As the cold retreats, Tuesday ushers in warmer, drier, and windier conditions. Gusts between 25 and 35 mph combined with low humidity will elevate the fire weather threat across much of North and Central Texas. Outdoor burning is discouraged, and residents are urged to stay alert for any fire weather advisories.
🌡️ Warm-Up Ahead
By midweek, winds will ease, but unseasonably warm temperatures will return. Highs will climb into the upper 70s and lower 80s Wednesday through Friday, offering a brief taste of late-summer warmth.
🌧️ Rain Chances on the Horizon
Relief may be on the way this weekend. A developing disturbance and cold front are forecast to move across the region, bringing the first meaningful rain chances of the month. Confidence is growing in scattered showers and thunderstorms from Saturday through Sunday morning, with rain chances currently ranging from 20% to 50%. The forecast will be refined as the week progresses.
📻 NOAA Radio Outage in Austin
A heads-up for those relying on NOAA Weather Radio: the transmitter in Austin is currently off the air due to equipment issues. Technicians are working to restore service. In the meantime, stay connected through local media, mobile apps, and trusted online sources.
🌎 Nationwide Chill
This local cold snap is part of a broader pattern, as a frigid continental polar airmass sweeps across the eastern two-thirds of the U.S. Record-breaking lows are being reported from the Southeast to Florida, while snow and biting winds grip the Great Lakes and Appalachians.
🎙️ KNCT Meteorologist Bill Hecke summed it up this morning: “Monday greets us with a crisp start and clear skies overhead with a gentle north breeze ushering in morning temperatures in the 30s. Before sunrise, those numbers will dip a bit further, adding a brisk chill to the early hours.”
Veterans Day Outlook Looking ahead to Tuesday, sunshine and a southerly breeze will bring highs in the 70s. This looks to be an ideal setting to honor our veterans with warmth and gratitude.
