Former Texas A&M football player Chris Larkin is returning to his alma mater this fall to lead Aggieland Against ALS, a community-driven event aimed at raising awareness and support for those affected by ALS. Diagnosed with the disease himself, Larkin has transformed his personal journey into a statewide movement that’s inspiring action across Texas.
Aggieland Against ALS will culminate on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at Aggie Park with a full day of activities including a 5K run, a community walk to Simpson Drill Field, and a large-scale Ice Bucket Challenge. Organizers expect more than 500 participants to take part in an attempt to break the world record for the largest Ice Bucket Challenge ever held on a college campus.
Founded by Chris and his wife Cissy, the initiative began in May during ALS Awareness Month and has grown into a rallying point for students, alumni, and supporters. The event not only raises funds for the ALS Association but also honors the resilience of those living with ALS—a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects mobility, speech, and breathing.
“ALS is no match for the Aggie Spirit,” said Larkin. “This event is about showing that when Aggies rally together, there’s no challenge too big—not even ALS.”
The Larkins have also played a key role in legislative advocacy, helping pass The Chris Larkin ALS Act in Texas, which addresses Medicare coverage gaps for ALS patients.
Aggieland Against ALS is supported by title sponsor NOW Foods, gold sponsors including Dave Coolidge, Lauren and Bob O’Brien, and the Connie and Ben Langston Charity. Texas A&M’s Corps of Cadets, the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band, and Phi Delta Theta are also contributing to the event’s success. William Chris Vineyards will be on-site offering wine sales to benefit ALS research.
Proceeds will go to the ALS Association, which leads national efforts in research, advocacy, and care services. There is currently no cure for ALS.
“The Aggie community has always stood for leadership and service,” said Lindsey McElwee, managing director of development. “Every step, every dollar, and every ice bucket challenge taken at Aggieland Against ALS moves us closer to making ALS livable for everyone, everywhere—and one day, to finding a cure.”
