The Austin City Council has approved $4 million in emergency rental assistance funding for fiscal year 2026, continuing support for the city’s I Belong in Austin (IBIA) program. The initiative, operated in partnership with El Buen Samaritano, aims to prevent evictions and housing displacement for residents earning at or below 80% of the area median income (AMI).

The funding, which includes an additional $400,000 as part of the 2025–2026 city budget, will be distributed from October 2025 through September 2026. Applications for assistance are accepted during the first seven days of each month. Residents can apply online at www.AustinTexas.gov/rent, in person at El Buen Samaritano’s offices, or by phone.

Austin Housing Director Deletta Dean emphasized the program’s role in maintaining housing stability: “With this additional funding, we can reach more Austinites who are at risk of eviction and ensure they have the support they need.”

The city continues to respond to rising eviction rates, particularly in Travis County. Community Displacement Prevention Officer Nefertitti Jackmon noted that many households remain cost-burdened, spending more than 30% of their income on housing. “This support is critical for households facing unexpected financial hardships,” she said.

Since its launch in 2023, the IBIA program has distributed over $13 million in rental assistance to nearly 3,000 households. More than 7,000 individuals have benefited, including nearly 3,900 children. Services have included direct rental aid, negotiated settlements, and help with moving and storage costs. The most-served zip codes include 78753, 78741, 78744, 78723, and 78758.

Dr. Rosamaria Murillo, CEO of El Buen Samaritano, described the program as a stabilizing force: “I Belong in Austin affirms the power of stability, keeping families rooted and building a future where all Austinites can flourish together.”

Eligibility for assistance is determined through a randomized selection process. Previous applicants must reapply each month, as applications are not carried over.
