As of midnight October 1, funding for several federal agencies has expired, resulting in a partial government shutdown. This includes portions of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

On September 19, the House of Representatives passed a continuing resolution to extend government funding through November 21, with support from the Trump Administration. However, the measure has stalled in the Senate due to ongoing policy negotiations.

Despite the lapse in appropriations, most VA services and benefits will continue without interruption. However, some programs will be temporarily affected. Here’s what Veterans and their families need to know:

Services Temporarily Suspended

  • Career counseling and Transition Assistance Program activities
  • GI Bill Hotline
  • VA regional benefits offices
  • Public affairs and outreach efforts
  • Permanent placement of headstones and grounds maintenance at VA national cemeteries
  • Processing of pre-need burial applications
  • Printing of new presidential memorial certificates

Services That Remain Operational

  • VA Medical Centers, Outpatient Clinics, and Vet Centers remain open
  • Compensation, pension, education, and housing benefits will continue to be processed and delivered
  • Burials will proceed at VA national cemeteries; applications for headstones and markers will be processed
  • The Board of Veterans’ Appeals will continue issuing decisions
  • VA Contact Centers (1-800-MyVA411) and the Veterans Crisis Line (Dial 988, Press 1) remain available 24/7

Veterans are encouraged to monitor official VA channels for updates and to reach out to support services as needed. While the shutdown presents challenges, essential health care and benefits remain protected.
