The S.C. Lee Jr. High Wind Ensemble has been named a Commended Winner in the Foundation for Music Education’s national Mark of Excellence competition, placing the ensemble among the top-performing bands in its classification across the country.
The 2025 competition drew 478 entries from 40 states, with S.C. Lee’s group recognized in the category for schools with more than 600 students in grades 7 and 8. The award highlights the ensemble’s achievements during the 2024–25 school year, including a standout performance record and strong student participation in regional music programs.
“This award is just the cherry on top of a successful year,” said Kenneth Marina, Director of Bands at S.C. Lee. “Our band had the most students earn a spot in the All-Region Band and was the only school to receive unanimous Superior Ratings from every judge at UIL Concert and Sight-Reading. The standard we are setting is building a strong foundation for the Pride of Cove.”
In total, 42 students from S.C. Lee earned placement in the All-Region Band, and every ensemble in Copperas Cove ISD received Superior Ratings at the UIL Concert Evaluation & Sight-Reading Contest. The Wind Ensemble earned straight “1” ratings, underscoring the program’s consistency and excellence.
“S.C. Lee’s recognition with this award is a true testament to the dedication and excellence of our directors and students,” said Megan Kenobbie, CCISD Director of Fine Arts. “We are incredibly proud of their hard work and know they are more than deserving of this honor. Our students continue to amaze us, guided by directors who pour their passion into building a strong, successful program.”
The Mark of Excellence competition honors middle and high school music ensembles nationwide for achieving the highest standards in performance. S.C. Lee’s recognition adds to a growing legacy of musical achievement in Copperas Cove and reflects the district’s commitment to arts education.
