Individuals interested in cemetery preservation are invited to register for two upcoming workshops taking place near Athens this October. Hosted in partnership with Texas Cemetery Restoration, the workshops will provide hands-on instruction in gravestone cleaning, leveling, and repair techniques.

Led by preservation specialist Rusty Brenner, the sessions are designed to teach participants how to care for historic gravestones using a Do-No-Harm ethic, which emphasizes safe and respectful restoration practices. Attendees will gain practical experience with specialized tools and materials commonly used in cemetery preservation projects.

Workshop Schedule and Locations

October 16–17: New York Cemetery

This two-day workshop offers a comprehensive overview of cemetery preservation, including gravestone cleaning, leveling, and multiple types of repairs. Participants will work directly with historic gravestones at New York Cemetery and must attend both days to complete the training.

October 18: Fincastle Cemetery

This half-day session provides introductory guidance for those beginning cemetery preservation work. Participants will focus on cleaning dirt and biological growth from gravestones at Fincastle Cemetery. Minors may attend but must be accompanied by a legal guardian.

Space is limited for both workshops, and advanced registration is required. Interested individuals are encouraged to review the workshop descriptions carefully before selecting a session. Additional details, including location maps and registration links, are available on the official registration page.

Support for these programs is provided by the Lana Hughes Nelson Endowment Fund for Cemetery Preservation.
