Whether you’re a seasoned archer or just curious about the art of bowhunting, mark your calendars for Saturday, October 11th, when the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s (TPWD) Community Archery Program teams up with Inks Lake State Park and a host of partners to present a hands-on, family-friendly event: Explore Bowhunting.

From 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, participants will have the chance to dive into the world of archery and bowhunting through interactive stations, expert-led demonstrations, and engaging activities, all free with park admission and open to all ages.
“This is a great event to hone your skills, further your knowledge, and understand what it takes to be a successful bowhunter,” said Adam Lewis, TPWD’s community archery specialist. “Whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine your technique, this event offers something for everyone.”
With support from TPWD Game Wardens, Operation Game Thief, Texas Youth Hunt Program, TPWD Hunter’s Ed, Outdoor Tomorrow Foundation, Archery Trade Association, and other local partners, the event is designed to educate and inspire. Visitors will learn about:
- Proper gear selection and concealment techniques
- Animal anatomy and shot placement for ethical hunting
- Recovery and processing methods including skinning, quartering, and butchering
- Cooking tips and gear demonstrations
- Public hunting regulations and opportunities

The event will feature a state-of-the-art archery trailer, complete with interactive games and a range for adaptive archers. A 3D target range will help participants understand anatomy and improve shot accuracy, while youth-focused simulations will introduce the next generation to safe and responsible hunting practices.
TPWD’s Community Archery Program uses a “train the trainer” approach, equipping educators, scout leaders, veterans’ groups, and other community organizations with the tools and certification needed to host mobile archery programs. The curriculum, based on the National Archery in the Schools Program, emphasizes safety, range setup, and coaching fundamentals.
Some of this curriculum will be showcased during the event, offering a glimpse into TPWD’s broader mission to make archery accessible and engaging for all Texans.
All equipment will be provided, making it easy for newcomers to jump in and try their hand at archery. Whether you’re looking to sharpen your skills or simply enjoy a day in nature with family and friends, Explore Bowhunting promises a memorable experience.
