Austin Energy is revving up its commitment to clean energy and grid reliability with a major expansion of its Power Partner Electric Vehicle (PPEV) program. As of this week, several General Motors electric vehicles are now eligible to participate, joining Tesla’s lineup in a growing effort to make EV ownership part of the solution to peak energy demand.

Newly added GM models include:

  • Cadillac: Escalade IQ, LYRIQ, OPTIQ, VISTIQ
  • Chevrolet: Blazer EV, Equinox EV, Silverado EV, Sierra EV
  • GMC: Hummer EV

The PPEV program is designed to help balance the grid during high-demand periods—typically June through September—by temporarily pausing or slowing charging speeds on Level 2 chargers or qualifying vehicles. These adjustments are brief, do not drain battery charge, and can be manually overridden at any time.

Participants receive a $50 bill credit upon enrollment and $25 annually for continued participation. It’s a win-win: drivers support grid stability and earn rewards while helping Austin meet its clean energy goals.

“Adding GM’s electric vehicle lineup to Power Partner EV is a significant step toward creating a more flexible, sustainable electric grid,” said Richard Genece, Austin Energy’s Vice President for Customer Energy Solutions. “By enrolling in the program, EV drivers can directly contribute to Austin’s clean energy goals while earning incentives.”

Any EV can participate when using approved at-home charging stations from ChargePoint, EVoCharge, or Emporium. However, GM and Tesla are currently the only manufacturers whose vehicles can be directly accessed by Austin Energy for managed charging.

With plans to expand compatibility to more EV brands and smart chargers, Austin Energy is paving the way for a more responsive and resilient energy future.
