Voice of Texas Veterans with Julia Conner highlights TPWD’s September Ruck Hikes
In a powerful blend of nature, community, and purpose, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is once again inviting veterans, service members, families, and friends to lace up their boots and take part in Veteran Suicide Awareness Ruck Hikes throughout September. These hikes, held at Texas State Parks and State Natural Areas, are more than just a walk in the woods—they’re a step toward healing, connection, and hope.
“This will be our third consecutive year hosting these events, and it’s been growing,” said Nicole Mechler, TPWD’s military and internship coordinator and an Air Force veteran. “The more we can advocate and join together, the better for our communities.”
Each Saturday beginning September 6, parks across Texas will host hikes featuring a variety of trails and activities. The goal is simple but profound: raise awareness about veteran suicide, foster community support, and connect participants to resources that can save lives.
💬 A Conversation That Matters
On this week’s Voice of Texas Veterans, host Julia Conner sat down with Mechler to discuss the initiative. “We want everyone to come out and support this,” Mechler emphasized. “We’ve worked with the Texas Veterans Commission in the past and made some really great connections.”
The conversation underscored a critical truth: while suicide is often seen as an individual crisis, its ripple effects touch families, friends, and entire communities. That’s why TPWD and its partners—including the Veteran Mental Health Department (VMHD)—are working to address veteran suicide as a public health issue.
🤝 Resources and Accessibility
TPWD is committed to making these events inclusive and accessible. Attendees can request program modifications at least two weeks in advance through an online form. Veterans and eligible participants can also take advantage of the Texas Parklands Passport, which offers free entry to all state parks for active duty military, veterans, disabled veterans, Gold Star Families, and seniors. Passes can be obtained at any State Park headquarters—visitors are encouraged to arrive early if planning to get one at the event.

🌟 A Broader Mission
VMHD’s approach is rooted in inclusion. With the broadest definition of “veteran”—regardless of discharge status, branch, or length of service—the department offers free training, technical assistance, and direct services to all who need them. Their work spans suicide prevention, homelessness, trauma recovery, peer support, and more.
“September is suicide awareness month,” Mechler said, “but we should be recognizing this all year long.”
