This September, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) invites veterans, active military, families, and friends to lace up their boots and take part in a powerful statewide initiative: the Veteran Suicide Awareness Ruck Hikes.

Now in its third year, the program continues to grow in reach and impact. “The more we can advocate and join together, the better for our communities,” said Nicole Mechler, TPWD’s military and internship coordinator. These hikes aren’t just about miles—they’re about meaning. Each step taken on the trails is a show of solidarity, a moment of reflection, and a reminder that no one walks alone.

Beginning Saturday, September 6, hikes will be held every weekend throughout the month at various Texas State Parks and Natural Areas. Each location offers its own blend of scenic trails and supportive activities, designed to foster connection and healing in nature’s embrace. Details on host sites and schedules are available through TPWD’s State Parks Events Calendar.

As Central Texas continues to straddle the line between heat and incoming rain, these hikes offer more than just a change of scenery—they offer hope. Whether you’re a Veteran, a supporter, or simply someone who believes in the power of togetherness, TPWD’s Ruck Hikes are a chance to walk with purpose.
