Copperas Cove ISD continues to shine in educational leadership, as former Cove Junior High assistant principal Kelly Thompson has been named the 2025–26 Region 12 Middle School Assistant Principal of the Year by the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals (TASSP).
Thompson, who served at Cove Jr. High from January 2022 until her recent promotion to principal of Martin Walker Elementary in July, is being honored for her outstanding dedication, leadership, and heart-centered approach to education.
“Being named TASSP Region 12 Assistant Principal of the Year is truly an honor,” Thompson shared. “I love my job and the incredible school community I get to serve every day. This recognition comes from leading with heart to support our staff and students. They inspire me daily and remind me why this work matters.”
Her recognition marks the second consecutive year a Cove educator has earned this prestigious title, following last year’s honoree Marshall Chauvin, now principal at S.C. Lee Jr. High. Julie Kearney also received the award in the mid-2000s while serving in the district—making Thompson the third CCISD assistant principal to receive this distinction.
Superintendent Dr. Brent Hawkins praised Thompson’s journey and impact:
“Mrs. Thompson has come up through the ranks in our district and proven herself to be an outstanding educational leader. Her dedication to the students and staff alike helps make the campuses she’s worked on successful and creates a positive learning environment for each student. We are proud of her, and she is beyond deserving of this award.”
Thompson’s career with CCISD began in 2012 as a substitute teacher and instructional aide. She spent nine years teaching at Clements/Parsons Elementary before stepping into administration, where her leadership quickly made a lasting impression.
Throughout the 2025–26 school year, Thompson will be recognized by TASSP and honored at their annual summer workshop—bringing well-deserved attention to the excellence thriving in Copperas Cove schools.
