A routine morning turned tense in downtown Killeen as emergency crews responded to a significant gas leak near Fourth Street and Avenue B, caused by a contractor striking a major gas main.
The Killeen Fire Department was dispatched at 9:22 a.m., with the first crew arriving on scene just three minutes later. Upon assessment, firefighters confirmed a large gas service line was actively leaking, prompting swift action to protect nearby residents and businesses.
Crews evacuated an apartment building and four businesses, relocating approximately 100 individuals to the Killeen Arts and Activities Center auditorium for safety. The coordinated response included support from the Killeen Police Department, Temple Police, Killeen Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (OHSEM), and Atmos Energy. Temple PD provided a mobile incident command post to assist with operations.
By 11:30 a.m., Atmos Energy successfully stopped the leak. Fire crews remained on site to ensure all buildings were clear of residual gas before allowing residents and business owners to return.
This incident underscores the importance of rapid coordination and preparedness among local agencies. Thanks to their swift response, no injuries were reported, and the community was kept safe.
