In a major win for Texas families, Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller has announced that students eligible for reduced-price school meals will now receive them free of charge for the 2025–2026 school year. Thanks to extended funding from the 89th Texas Legislature, both school breakfasts and lunches will be covered at no cost to families, with support continuing through the 2026–2027 school year.
“This initiative removes barriers that prevent children from accessing healthy meals,” said Commissioner Miller. “Nutritious food fuels academic success, and this funding ensures more students can thrive.”
Parents and guardians are encouraged to submit household applications for free or reduced-price meal eligibility—available online or at school offices and cafeterias. Only one application is needed per household, and schools will notify families of their status once processed. Campuses participating in the Community Eligibility Provision do not require applications, as meals are already provided to all students.
The Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) administers the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs, ensuring that Texas students have access to nutritious meals every day. For more information, families can contact their school’s nutrition department or visit the TDA Food & Nutrition Division.
