August 2025
This afternoon, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Mayor Debbie Nash-King for our monthly segment, “All Things Killeen,” covering highlights for August and early September. We discussed back-to-school preparations, opportunities to serve on civic boards, the city’s shelter-clearing initiative, and an upcoming book recycling event. Tune in to “All Things Killeen” with Mayor Debbie Nash-King every second Monday of the month at 6:15 p.m. on KNCT.
Slow Down in the School Zones and Stay Alert
As the new school year kicks off on Wednesday, August 13, families should expect some travel delays—especially near construction zones. Drivers are urged to stay alert, slow down, and watch for school buses and children crossing. Let’s work together to keep our roads safe and ensure every student gets to school safely.
Men In Black

KISD Community Relations is calling on community partners to suit up and show up for a powerful first-day tradition: Men in Black – Welcome Back! On August 13, volunteers will gather across campuses to greet students with positivity, encouragement, and a strong sense of community pride.
This initiative invites district-approved volunteers to help usher in the new school year, offering smiles, high-fives, and a warm welcome to every child stepping onto campus. Start and end times vary by location, and those interested can sign up via the QR code provided or call 254-336-1707 for more details.
Let’s make the first day unforgettable—because when students see their community standing tall, they know they’re supported from day one.

Central Texas Shelter Showdown Unites Shelters for a Day of Free Adoptions

Four regional shelters are teaming up for a heartwarming competition with a life-saving mission. The Central Texas Shelter Showdown brings together Killeen Animal Services, Lampasas Animal Shelter, Hill Country Humane Society, and Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter (WCRAS) for a day of friendly rivalry and community impact.
Leading up to the event, shelters will engage in playful social media challenges to spotlight adoptable pets and rally support. The main event takes place Saturday, August 23 from noon to 6 p.m. at the WCRAS campus, where all adoptable pets will be free to adopt.
Whether you’re looking for a loyal companion or simply want to support the cause, this is your chance to help clear the shelters and give deserving animals a forever home.
Touchdown in Downtown

Killeen is rolling out the turf for its biggest block party of the year—Touchdown in Downtown returns Saturday, September 6 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Historic Downtown Killeen, 200 East Avenue D. This high-energy celebration features live performances from KISD drumlines and cheer teams, Ray Lowe, the Darius Jackson Band, and the First Cavalry Division Rock Band. Guests can enjoy the Nyle Maxwell Jeep Jam, H-E-B’s Fun Zone, food trucks, vendors, and more. Craft, Recycle, and Celebrate Library Card Sign-Up Month in Killeen

The Killeen Public Library invites residents of all ages to join in a day of creativity and sustainability at the Maker Day & Book Recycling Event, happening Saturday, September 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Killeen Civic & Conference Center (Ballroom C). This free event celebrates Library Card Sign-Up Month with hands-on craft stations, library card registration, and a community-wide book recycling initiative.
Attendees can explore the benefits of handcrafting—known to reduce stress, boost cognition, and spark creativity—while Public Works sets up recycling stations for books, magazines, and paper products. Both library branches will be closed during the event to support full participation.

As our conversation came to a close, both Mayor Nash-King and I shared in the excitement of a new school year and KNCT’s return to the broadcast booth. And before she departed, she left us with one final message—thoughtful, timely, and true to her commitment to the Killeen community.
“When you are in a school zone, stay focused. Do not be on your phone and follow the speed limit. We are responsible for the lives that are in that area.”
