August brings more than summer heat—it brings a call to action. As part of National Water Quality Month, the City of Austin’s Watershed Protection Department is spotlighting the vital work of keeping our creeks, lakes, rivers, and springs clean, safe, and thriving.
From Lady Bird Lake to Shoal Creek, Austin’s waterways are more than scenic—they’re essential. And while the city works year-round to protect them, residents are being invited to take part in simple, powerful ways:
- 🛑 Report Pollution: If you spot oil, paint, or chemicals near a creek or storm drain, call Austin 3-1-1 at (512) 974-2000. Field investigators are on call 24/7 to respond.
- 🧤 Volunteer for Cleanups: Join the lake crew or partner groups to help remove the 11 tons of trash pulled from Lady Bird Lake annually—and the 4,500 tons collected citywide.
- 🐾 Scoop the Poop: With over 250,000 dogs in Austin, pet waste adds up fast. Picking up after your pup—even in your own yard—helps prevent algae blooms and protects wildlife.
- 🌿 Grow Green: Sustainable landscaping through the city’s Grow Green program teaches residents how to use native plants, rain gardens, and eco-friendly pest control to keep chemicals out of our water.
- 🚫 Mark a Storm Drain: Help label storm drains with “No Dumping – Drains to Creek” to raise awareness and protect water quality.
- 📚 Educate the Next Generation: The Youth Education team offers field trips and curriculum focused on flooding, erosion, and water safety.
- 📝 Take the Rain to River Survey: By September 15, residents can help shape the city’s 10-year strategic plan for watershed protection by completing a quick survey.
Austin’s waterways are a source of pride, recreation, and life. Let’s keep them flowing clean and strong—for today and for generations to come.
