One of Copperas Cove ISD’s most celebrated campuses is welcoming a new face at the helm. Kelly Thompson, a longtime educator and administrator within the district, has been appointed principal of Martin Walker Elementary, the top-performing school on Cove’s southwest side.

Thompson succeeds Breanne Turner, who recently earned a district-level promotion. Her arrival marks a full-circle moment in a career deeply rooted in the community.

“Since moving our family here in 2012, I’ve had the privilege of growing within this incredible district—from my early days as a substitute teacher to now having this amazing opportunity to serve as the principal of Martin Walker Elementary,” Thompson said. “It is an absolute honor to join the exceptional team at Martin Walker Elementary, and I’m excited to return to my elementary roots and serve our students, staff, and families with all my heart.”

Over the past 13 years, Thompson has built a strong foundation in education—from classroom teaching at Clements/Parsons Elementary across a broad span of grade levels and subjects, to serving as assistant principal at Copperas Cove Junior High. Her leadership in testing, campus safety, and innovative blended learning initiatives helped earn national recognition for the junior high.

Copperas Cove ISD Superintendent Dr. Brent Hawkins praised Thompson’s appointment, noting her collaborative style and depth of experience: “Mrs. Thompson has proven herself to quickly be a quality educational leader. With her diverse background at the elementary level and her nature in working with other educators, Mrs. Thompson is poised to continue the incredible success Martin Walker Elementary has seen in recent years.”

Thompson has already begun her new role, preparing for the start of the 2025–26 academic year on August 14. She holds degrees from Rutgers University and Lamar University, and alongside her husband Michael, proudly calls Copperas Cove home. Their three children have all attended Cove schools, with two graduates and one current elementary student. Thompson is also active in the community, serving on the Board of Directors for Copperas Cove Crime Stoppers.

With Martin Walker Elementary earning an “A” rating from the Texas Education Agency for three consecutive evaluation years, Thompson’s leadership promises to build on a legacy of excellence—nurturing a campus culture defined by achievement, connection, and care.
