After nearly two years of transformation, the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) is ready to welcome the public back for a grand re-opening on July 1, marking a new era for one of the state’s premier aquatic education and conservation destinations.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s (TPWD) facility underwent a sweeping renovation beginning in August 2023, revitalizing nearly 300,000 gallons of aquariums, adding expanded exhibit spaces, modernizing the Toyota Fishes of Texas theater, and upgrading recreational fishing ponds, including Lake Zebco and Strike King Pond. Backed by an $8.5 million investment from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation (TPWF) and Friends of TFFC, the updated center promises a richer, more immersive visitor experience.

“TFFC has always been a special place where people connect with Texas’ aquatic life and the work of our Inland Fisheries Division,” said TFFC Director Tom Lang. “With these renovations, we’re providing a first-class facility that will inspire and educate for decades to come.”

Festivities begin with a ribbon cutting hosted by the Athens Chamber of Commerce, followed by a week of public celebrations. The excitement culminates July 6 with “Fireworks at the Fisheries,” the City of Athens’ annual Independence Day event featuring a vibrant fireworks show over the hatchery ponds.

Through nearly 30 years of operation, TFFC has welcomed over 1.1 million visitors, offering opportunities to explore native aquatic species, test their angling skills, and learn how inland waterways support the state’s natural heritage. It also serves as home to the Texas Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame, the Toyota ShareLunker Program, and the Fisheries Management Hall of Excellence, honoring global leaders in fish conservation science.

Open Tuesday–Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., TFFC offers a family-friendly, interactive experience for just $5.50 per adult. From September to February, the center is closed on Tuesdays.
