Austin’s dedication to outdoor spaces and community wellness takes center stage this July, as city leaders officially recognize National Park and Recreation Month. On June 5, 2025, the Austin City Council and Austin Parks and Recreation Department announced the City Proclamation, underscoring the vital role parks, trails, and recreation programs play in enhancing the health, well-being, and quality of life for residents.

This year’s celebration holds special significance—it marks 40 years of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) leading the movement to strengthen communities through parks and recreation. As a nationwide initiative, Park and Recreation Month highlights the countless benefits of green spaces, from promoting environmental sustainability to fostering childhood development and social connection.

“Parks and recreation are essential to the physical, mental, and social well-being of our community,” said Jesús Aguirre, Director of Austin Parks and Recreation and Chair of the NRPA Board of Directors. “Austin’s green spaces foster active lifestyles, support childhood development, contribute to economic prosperity, and preserve the natural beauty that makes Austin a special place to live and play.”

Throughout July, Austin Parks and Recreation will host a variety of special events, educational activities, and interactive programs designed to encourage community members to explore their local parks, trails, swimming pools, and recreational facilities. These initiatives will spotlight the many ways parks contribute to sustainability, resilience, and overall quality of life in Central Texas.

From guided nature walks to youth programs and family-friendly activities, the city invites residents to take part in the month-long celebration and deepen their connection to Austin’s diverse outdoor spaces.
