During one of our earlier pledge breaks this morning, Laury and Desiree were commenting on a catchy tune by the name of “Now and Forever.” It is an instrumental released in 1961 by Bert Kaempfert as part of his Dancing in Wonderland album. But this story isn’t about Bert, it is about Milt Gabler, who co-wrote the song.

Gabler was a record producer, songwriter, and music industry innovator who played a significant role in shaping jazz, swing, and early rock and roll. Born in Harlem in 1911, he founded the famous Commodore Records, one of the first independent jazz labels.

He is known most notably for producing hits like Billie Holiday’s “Strange Fruit,” Bill Haley’s “Rock Around the Clock,” and the Andrews Sisters “Rum and Coca-Cola.” He also collaborated with artists like Duke Ellington and Louis Jordan, co-writing songs like “L-O-V-E” and “Danke Shoen.”

His contributions earned him a lifetime achievement award and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Billy Crystal and Milt Gabler share a family connection—Milt Gabler was Billy Crystal’s uncle. Crystal has spoken fondly of his uncle’s influence on his life and appreciation for music. In 2005, he even curated a compilation album titled Billy Crystal Presents The Milt Gabler Story, highlighting Gabler’s contributions to jazz, swing, and early rock & roll.

Gabler is just one reason why preserving the memory of this beautiful music is imperative. Every song that we play on KNCT has stories similar and with your help, we can continue to tell them on YOUR public radio station. Donate today by calling (877) 533-5628 or go online at KNCT.org.
