With Memorial Day Weekend fast approaching, the Austin Police Department (APD) is ramping up enforcement efforts to keep roads safe. Starting last night through Monday, May 26th, additional patrol officers will be stationed in the downtown area to monitor traffic and identify intoxicated drivers.

This initiative aligns with APD’s year-round DWI No Refusal policy, which operates from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., Monday through Sunday. Under this program, officers can apply for blood search warrants when suspected impaired drivers refuse to provide a breath or blood sample, ensuring that DUI laws are enforced effectively.

The stepped-up patrols will extend beyond the downtown area to cover highways, high-speed roadways, and waterways, helping prevent reckless driving and alcohol-related accidents.

The APD, alongside the City of Austin Transportation and Public Works Department, remains committed to reducing traffic-related injuries and fatalities. Officials urge all drivers to plan ahead, use rideshare services, designate a sober driver, and make responsible choices to protect themselves and others.
