KILLEEN, Texas – The City of Killeen is making headlines as it becomes one of just 35 Texas cities to receive the coveted Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community designation, marking a major milestone for the region. This achievement, granted by Governor Greg Abbott’s Economic Development & Tourism Office, recognizes Killeen’s dedication to fostering tourism as a driving force for economic growth and community engagement.

Killeen’s inclusion in the Travel Texas program places it among a prestigious group of destinations in the initiative’s inaugural year. Even more notably, Killeen is the first city in Bell County to receive the designation, a reflection of its strategic tourism development and rich cultural offerings.

“This designation is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire community,” said Tanida Mullen, Manager of the Killeen Convention & Visitors Bureau. “From our welcoming residents to our thriving local businesses, we’re committed to making Killeen a premier destination where visitors feel at home while experiencing everything our vibrant city has to offer.”

Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of tourism in Texas, noting that the industry supports 1.3 million jobs and contributes over $199 billion in annual economic impact.

“Tourism is critical to both our local and state economies,” Abbott stated. “I congratulate the City of Killeen and Killeen Convention & Visitors Bureau on earning this designation.”

The recognition follows Killeen’s successful completion of a rigorous certification process, ensuring its place as a tourism hub that welcomes visitors with history, entertainment, and community-driven experiences.

Travel Texas Director Tim Fennell praised Killeen’s vibrant mix of attractions, highlighting the city’s historic connection to Fort Cavazos, as well as its arts, shopping, and dining experiences.

“Killeen offers visitors a distinct taste of Texas hospitality,” Fennell said. “From military heritage to public art installations, lively music festivals, and scenic parks, there is something for every traveler to enjoy.”

This designation adds to Killeen’s growing reputation as a cultural and tourism powerhouse. In recent months, the city has also been designated a Music Friendly City, reinforcing its commitment to arts and entertainment. Additionally, Killeen was invited to join the Texas First Street cohort, an initiative that paves the way for National Main Street accreditation.
