Cedar Park Fire Chief James Mallinger has been appointed by Governor Greg Abbott to serve on the Texas Commission on Fire Protection, a role that positions him at the forefront of shaping and enforcing statewide fire service standards. His term will extend until February 1, 2029, allowing him to contribute his vast expertise to advancing fire safety across Texas.

For nearly three decades, Chief Mallinger has built a distinguished career in fire service, starting as a volunteer in 1989 before officially joining the Cedar Park Fire Department in 1996. Rising through the ranks, he became Fire Chief in 2012, overseeing a team of 92 firefighters and a multimillion-dollar budget. His leadership has been instrumental in the department’s success and ongoing commitment to public safety.

Mallinger’s new role as commissioner expands his influence beyond Cedar Park, enabling him to shape policies and provide guidance to fire departments statewide. His appointment reflects his extensive background, including six years as the City’s Emergency Management Coordinator and his involvement in professional organizations such as the Capital Area Fire Chiefs Association and the Texas Fire Chiefs Association.

In addition to his leadership roles, Mallinger is an educator, serving as an Adjunct Instructor with TEEX and Austin Community College. His credentials, which include certifications as a Fire Service Chief Executive Officer, Executive Fire Officer, and Chief Fire Officer, further affirm his dedication to the profession.

With his appointment, Chief Mallinger continues his lifelong commitment to fire service excellence, ensuring Texas firefighters receive the support and standards necessary to protect communities effectively.
