Save Water, Save Georgetown

GEORGETOWN – The City of Georgetown is hosting a Water Conservation Expo on Saturday, March 8, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Georgetown Community Center, located at 445 E. Morrow St. This free, family-friendly event will offer residents the opportunity to discover water-saving tips and make a positive impact toward protecting Georgetown’s precious water resources.

All Georgetown water utility customers are required to follow a one-day-per-week outdoor watering schedule under Drought Stage 2 restrictions. The schedule is based on the last digit of the street address and aims to ensure efficient use of water resources. Watering with an irrigation system is not permitted from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on any day and is prohibited on Mondays. However, watering with a hand-held hose or bucket is allowed any day and at any time for trees, food gardens, and other plants.

If you live in the following ZIP codes, the schedule may apply to you: 78626, 78633, 78628, 78641, 78642, 76527. Georgetown Water Utility serves customers in many more ZIP codes. Please refer to the service map for details.

Water conservation is crucial in maintaining our treated water capacity, especially during the summer months when demand is high. Georgetown Water Utility customers must adhere to the one-day-per-week watering restrictions to ensure a sustainable water supply.

Key Points About Watering:

  • Restrictions apply to both commercial and residential customers.
  • Low-output watering methods, like handheld watering, using a watering can/bucket, are allowed any day of the week.
  • No watering is allowed between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. any day.
  • Drip irrigation is allowed on your watering day within the allotted 12-hour time frame of Midnight – 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. – Midnight.
  • Mondays are no-watering days to allow the system to recover after the busy weekend.

Georgetown Water Utility serves approximately 74,000 water accounts, representing more than 170,000 people across a 440-square-mile service area, including parts of Williamson, Bell, and Burnet counties. The city’s water supply comes from both surface water and groundwater sources, with surface water primarily supplied through contracts with the Brazos River Authority (BRA) and other entities.

Water Wise Tips and Tricks

  • Only water when needed. Consider factors like weather, types of plants/turf, and grass height.
  • Ensure sprinkler heads are aimed at turf/planted areas to avoid wasting water on pavement.
  • Be weather-aware. Turn off irrigation systems and avoid manual watering if rain is forecasted.
  • Set your mower higher. Longer grass blades protect the ground underneath, helping moisture retention.
  • Use a broom instead of water to clean patios, decks, and sidewalks.
  • Follow the City of Georgetown watering schedule to ensure efficient water use.

By attending the Water Conservation Expo and following these water-saving tips, residents can make a significant contribution to preserving Georgetown’s water resources for future generations. For more information, visit the City of Georgetown’s website.
