Two seniors from Midway High School, Alastair McGrath and Ty Roenfanz, have been distinguished as National Merit Finalists, placing them among the elite high school scholars in the nation.
This recognition is a testament to their hard work and perseverance. Initially, McGrath and Roenfanz were named Semifinalists in September, ranking in the top 1 percent of students nationwide based on their PSAT/NMSQT scores. To progress to Finalist status, they submitted an extensive application showcasing their exceptional academic performance, leadership roles, community service, personal achievements, and received a recommendation from their school.

As Finalists, they are now in the running for National Merit Scholarships and additional scholarships from various universities and corporate sponsors. The recipients of these scholarships will be announced this spring.
Principal Alison Smith of Midway High School expressed her pride, saying, “This is a tremendous honor for Alastair and Ty, and for Midway ISD. They have demonstrated exceptional dedication and talent, and we could not be prouder of their hard work and achievements.”
The National Merit Scholarship Program is one of the most prestigious academic competitions in the United States, with approximately 15,000 students advancing to Finalist status each year. Of these, around 7,500 students will receive scholarships.
