A Legacy of Laughter and Song
Jim Nabors, born James Thurston Nabors on June 12, 1930, in Sylacauga, Alabama, was an American actor, singer, and comedian who left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry. Best known for his portrayal of the lovable and naive Gomer Pyle on “The Andy Griffith Show” and its spin-off “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.,” Nabors’ career spanned over six decades, showcasing his versatility and talent.
Nabors’ journey to stardom began in the unlikeliest of places—a Santa Monica nightclub where he performed a cabaret act. It was there that he was discovered by Andy Griffith, who saw potential in Nabors’ unique blend of humor and charm. Nabors joined “The Andy Griffith Show” in 1962, and his character, Gomer Pyle, quickly became a fan favorite. Gomer’s catchphrase, “Gollllll-ly!” became iconic, and Nabors’ portrayal of the good-natured gas station attendant earned him widespread acclaim.

In 1964, Nabors was given his own spin-off show, “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.,” where Gomer joined the Marine Corps. The show was a hit, running for five seasons and solidifying Nabors’ place in television history. Beyond his acting career, Nabors was also known for his rich baritone singing voice. He recorded numerous albums and singles, often featuring romantic ballads, and became a popular guest on variety shows in the 1960s and 1970s.
One of Nabors’ most cherished traditions was singing “Back Home Again in Indiana” at the Indianapolis 500, a role he performed almost every year from 1972 to 2014. His rendition of the song became a beloved part of the race’s pre-race ceremonies.

Nabors’ personal life was marked by his long-term relationship with Stan Cadwallader, whom he married in 2013. The couple had been together for 38 years before tying the knot in Washington state, where same-sex marriage had recently been legalized. Jim Nabors passed away on November 30, 2017, at the age of 87, in his home in Honolulu, Hawaii. His legacy lives on through his memorable performances and the joy he brought to countless fans. Nabors’ unique blend of humor, warmth, and talent continues to be celebrated, ensuring that his contributions to entertainment will never be forgotten.
