Louisville – Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) has successfully concluded its eighth annual Wheelchair Rugby Invitational in Louisville, Kentucky, awarding the prestigious Code of Honor Cup to this year’s champions: the WWAR Generals, WASA/CKRI Lightning, and MedStar NRH United.

The event, which took place over the past four days, saw 20 teams from across the country competing in three divisions in a fast-paced, round-robin format. The Invitational kicked off with an all-veteran scrimmage, setting the stage for an exciting tournament. The competition featured 50 intense matchups, culminating in the crowning of the three Code of Honor Cup winners. The tournament showcased incredible talent, including nine athletes who had previously competed in the 2024 Paris Paralympics.

“This year marks a major milestone with our Rugby Invitational now considered the largest wheelchair rugby event in the country,” said Fabio Villarroel, Director of PVA Sports and Recreation. “PVA is incredibly proud of the growth of this tournament and honored to congratulate all the winning teams. The Invitational continues to unite athletes from across the nation, break down barriers, and demonstrate the power of adaptive sports in changing lives. We are honored to host an event of this caliber and remain committed to empowering more athletes with disabilities.”

Since its inception in 2018, the Wheelchair Rugby Invitational has been hosted by PVA, with the mission to broaden the scope of PVA’s adaptive sports program, grow the sport of wheelchair rugby, and empower the disability community. The event serves as an opportunity to enhance the quality of life for veterans with spinal cord injuries and diseases, such as MS and ALS, by helping them regain their independence, build confidence, and foster camaraderie.

PVA’s Sports and Recreation Department, which hosts the event, offers over 60 free virtual and in-person adaptive sporting and recreation opportunities year-round, benefiting thousands of veterans across the country. The department is dedicated to improving the quality of life for veterans and all people with disabilities through activities such as bass fishing, bowling, yoga, paracycling, and more.
