The Maestro of Tijuana Brass and A&M Records

Herb Alpert’s journey from a shy trumpet player in Los Angeles to a celebrated musician, record producer, and philanthropist is a testament to his passion and perseverance. Born on March 31, 1935, in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, Herb was the youngest of three children in a musically inclined family. His father, Louis, was a tailor and mandolin player, while his mother, Tillie, taught violin.

From a young age, Herb was drawn to the trumpet. He began taking lessons at eight and quickly developed a love for jazz and Latin music. His musical talent led him to the University of Southern California, where he played in the Trojan Marching Band. However, it was his service in the U.S. Army during the Korean War that honed his skills further as he performed with the 6th Army Band.

In 1957, Herb teamed up with lyricist Rob Weerts and began writing songs for Keen Records. His early success as a songwriter included hits like “Baby Talk” by Jan and Dean and “Wonderful World” by Sam Cooke. But it was the formation of Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass in the 1960s that catapulted him to fame. The band’s unique blend of jazz, pop, and Latin music, along with hits like “A Taste of Honey” and “Rise,” made them one of the most popular acts of the era.

Herb’s influence extended beyond music. In 1962, he co-founded A&M Records with Jerry Moss, creating one of the most successful independent record labels in the industry. Under his leadership, A&M Records signed iconic artists like The Carpenters, Janet Jackson, and Sting, solidifying its place in music history.

Despite his busy career, Herb never lost his love for the arts. He pursued painting and sculpting, showcasing his work in exhibitions around the world. His philanthropic efforts have supported art education and environmental causes, leaving a lasting impact on the community. Herb Alpert’s legacy is not just in his music but in his ability to inspire and uplift others through his art and generosity. His story is a reminder that with dedication and a love for what you do, you can achieve greatness and make a difference in the world.
