Marine veteran Harry and his 19-month-old Golden Labrador Retriever, Skipper, are among the latest graduates of Patriot PAWS Service Dogs, based in Rockwall, Texas. Patriot PAWS specializes in training and providing service dogs to veterans experiencing mobility disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, and Post-Traumatic Stress.

This is not Harry’s first experience with Patriot PAWS. Nearly 13 years ago, he became one of the first veterans to receive a service dog from the organization. As a Vietnam veteran, Harry understands firsthand the profound impact a service dog can have on one’s life. “The care they put into matching you with the right dog is unbelievable,” Harry reflects on his experience.

Today, Harry appreciates the newfound freedom Skipper has brought into his life, whether it’s taking rides in his golf cart or visiting his local American Legion in Rockport. “Skipper and I share a bond that grows stronger every day,” Harry adds.

Harry is particularly grateful to Bonnie Hoard, the Veteran Trainer at Patriot PAWS, for her dedication and attention to helping veterans regain their independence. Bonnie, a Navy veteran herself, has played an essential role in Harry’s journey.

The Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) plays a crucial role in supporting organizations like Patriot PAWS. Established in 1927, TVC’s mission is to advocate for and provide superior service to veterans, their families, and survivors. TVC offers a variety of programs and services, including veteran disability claims, educational benefits, employment services, mental health initiatives, justice-involved veteran support, and entrepreneurship opportunities.

The PACT Act, which expands VA health care and benefits for veterans exposed to burn pits and other toxic substances, is one of TVC’s key initiatives.

The Texas Veterans Commission supports Patriot PAWS with a $500,000 Fund for Veterans Assistance Grant, which helps ensure that more veterans like Harry can benefit from service dogs and regain their independence.
