Bob Uecker, the voice of the Milwaukee Brewers and a beloved figure in baseball broadcasting, passed away Thursday at the age of 90. Known affectionately as “Mr. Baseball,” Uecker’s career spanned over half a century, leaving an indelible mark on the sport.
Born on January 26, 1934, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Uecker began his baseball journey with the Milwaukee Braves in 1956. After several years in the minor leagues, he made his major league debut in 1962 as a backup catcher. Uecker played for the Milwaukee Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, and Atlanta Braves from 1962 to 1967, winning a World Series with the Cardinals in 1964.
After retiring from playing, Uecker transitioned to broadcasting and became the primary play-by-play announcer for the Milwaukee Brewers in 1971. His self-deprecating humor and distinctive voice made him a beloved figure in the baseball community. Uecker was known for his witty commentary and memorable calls, including his famous “UUUUUECK” catchphrase. Uecker’s career extended beyond the broadcast booth. He appeared in several movies and TV shows, including his role as Harry Doyle in the “Major League” film series and as George Owens on “Mr. Belvedere.” His contributions to baseball broadcasting were recognized with the Ford C. Frick Award from the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003.
Even in the face of his battle with small cell lung cancer since early 2023, Uecker’s enthusiasm for life and love for the game never wavered. His family released a statement saying, “Even in the face of this challenge, his enthusiasm for life was always present, never allowing his spirit to falter.”
Uecker’s impact on the Milwaukee Brewers and the baseball community was profound. His legacy will continue through the countless fans and players he inspired over the years. As news of his passing spread, fans gathered at his statue outside American Family Field to pay their respects, leaving flowers, Brewers caps, and cans of Miller Lite beer, a nod to his long-time endorsement. Bob Uecker will be remembered not only for his contributions to baseball but also for his humor, warmth, and unwavering dedication to the sport. He truly was “Mr. Baseball,” and his memory will live on in the hearts of fans everywhere.
