President Joe Biden declared January 9, 2025, as a National Day of Mourning to honor former President Carter. On this day, federal government offices, courts, the U.S. Postal Service, and major stock exchanges will be closed. Additionally, flags will be flown at half-staff for 30 days from the day of his death.
National Days of Mourning are designated by governments to honor the death of prominent individuals or to commemorate significant events. These days often involve flying national or military flags at half-mast and may include public ceremonies or moments of silence.
In the United States, the tradition of National Days of Mourning for presidents dates back to 1826, when President John Quincy Adams ordered flags to be flown at half-staff to honor the death of Thomas Jefferson. The current practice of observing a National Day of Mourning, including closing federal government offices and flying flags at half-staff for 30 days, was formalized in 1969 following the death of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Despite the closure of city offices, essential emergency services will remain fully operational, ensuring public safety without any disruption. Residents should note that trash collection services will proceed as scheduled; however, potential delays may occur due to impending winter weather conditions.
City offices are set to reopen on Friday, resuming normal business hours.
