The Battle of the Band Sells Out

This week we are presenting our (unofficially annual) airing of the first side of The Who Sell Out, faux commercials and all. We also have a 1967 set that includes a track that isn’t from 1967 (oops) and, to start things off, a Beatles vs. Stones set.

The Wax Museum at 12 p.m.

Rick Ronson, Deep Undercover

Deep Undercover sets examine the entire body of work of the artists. From recordings under their own name through session work, songwriting and record production.

Rockin’ in the Days of Confusion at 2 p.m.

This week, after staring off on an eerily appropriate note from David Bowie’s 1970 LP The Man Who Sold The World, we present a series of tracks that take us from 1968 to 1977, one year at a time. Since that still only makes eleven, we tack on two more tunes to bring the total up to 13 for the second consecutive show. Playlist

Audio Aftermath at 3 p.m.

In the first hour, we’ll hear Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Roxy Music, The Steve Miller Band, The Grateful Dead, and a song from a band who opened for some major acts, but never seemed to catch fire themselves.

In the second hour, we’ll hear Donovan, David Bowie, Aum, Matthew Fisher, Mount Rushmore, and the very strange coincidence in Pink Floyd’s Shine On You Crazy Diamond.

Rick Steves’ Europe at 5 p.m.

It’s no coincidence that South Korea has become an economic powerhouse, and a pop culture leader for much of the world. On the next Travel with Rick Steves, author Euny Hong explains how South Korea has made itself into one of the world’s “coolest countries.”

And guides from Portugal join Rick with recommendations for planning a week’s getaway to Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve, and the colorful and historic towns in between.

Guests

  • Euny Hong, author of “The Birth of Korean Cool” and “The Power of Nunchi” (Picador)
  • Claudia da Costa, tour guide from Lisbon
  • Fátima Bugarin, tour guide from Tomar, Portugal

The Mixtape at 6 p.m.

This week on the Mixtape, the mix is narrative songs: those songs that tell an engaging story.

Rock School at 7 p.m.

Rock is Dead?

Gene Simmons of KISS has doubled down on his statement that rock music is dead.  Some agree.  Some do not and some have written songs about it.  Is rock dead or is the rock YOU like dead?  We will look at this from a lot of angles.

Juke in the Back at 8 p.m.

Art Rupe & Specialty Records, Pt. 2 – 1950-53

This week, the “Juke In The Back” pays our respects to one of the great record men of the 1940s and 50s; Art Rupe. Rupe passed away on April 15, 2022 at the age of 104! He started Juke Box Records in 1944, which became Specialty Records in ’47. On part 2 of 3, Matt The Cat digs up some gems from Specialty’s golden period of 1950-53 from Roy Milton & His Solid Senders, Lloyd Price, Jesse & Marvin, Percy Mayfield and gospel group, The Swan Silvertones.

60 Watts at 9 p.m.

Tony Rocky Horror guides you through the cutting-edge sounds of noise rock, grunge, hardcore, metal, and alternative from around the world! This week featuring music by Heart to Gold.

The Retro Cocktail Hour at 10 p.m.

The music is served “shaken, not stirred” every week on The Retro Cocktail Hour.  Here you’ll find vintage recordings from the dawn of the Hi-Fi Era – imaginative, light-hearted (and sometimes light headed) pop stylings designed to underscore everything from the backyard barbecue to the high-tech bachelor pad.
Among the artists featured on The Retro Cocktail Hour are lounge legends like Frank Sinatra and Juan Esquivel; tiki gods Martin Denny and Les Baxter; swinging cocktail combos featuring The Three Suns and Jack “Mr. Bongo” Costanzo; and mambo king Perez Prado.  The series also spotlights up and coming lounge/exotica artists, including Waitiki, Ixtahuele, the Tikiyaki Orchestra, Big Kahuna and the Copa Cat Pack, the Voodoo Organist and many more.
