Info about the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine

Special to myKNCT.com.

This past week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized a third COVID-19 vaccine for public use. The vaccine is made by Janssen (Johnson & Johnson).

The VA expects to start receiving supplies of the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine at some VA health facilities within the next week. We’ll continue to receive supplies of both the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines as well. The added vaccines will help them offer vaccines to more Veterans faster.

Questions you may have about the different vaccines available at VA:

If I get the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine, will I only need 1 dose?

Yes. The Janssen vaccine requires 1 dose to be fully effective. Both the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines require 2 doses to be fully effective. If you already got your first dose of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine, you’ll need to get the second dose of the same vaccine.

Are all 3 COVID-19 vaccines safe?

The U.S. vaccine safety system ensures that all vaccines are as safe as possible. Before the FDA authorizes a vaccine for use, they carefully review the available safety data and clinical trial results for that vaccine. Your health care provider can help you decide if the vaccine is safe for you.To learn more about what you should know before getting a COVID-19 vaccine, including the vaccine’s ingredients, read the FDA fact sheets:FDA Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine fact sheetsFDA Moderna COVID-19 vaccine fact sheetsFDA Janssen COVID-19 vaccine fact sheets

Do we know if some COVID-19 vaccines work better than others?

No. The FDA has now authorized 3 different COVID-19 vaccines. Each vaccine’s clinical trial shows different results. But each trial took place in different parts of the U.S. and the world, at different times, and with different rates of COVID-19.The only way to test how well vaccines work compared to other vaccines is to test them in the same clinical trial (called a head-to-head trial). We don’t have any head-to-head trials for the 3 authorized COVID-19 vaccines at this time. What the VA does do know is that all 3 vaccines have been proven effective at preventing serious illness, hospitalization, and death from COVID-19. They also know that getting a COVID- 19 vaccine helps you protect yourself and others from COVID-19.Get more answers about the Janssen COVID-19 vaccine from the FDA
