Texas anglers now have access to a premier rainbow trout fishing location during the peak of the winter stocking season, thanks to a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) “no fee” access lease on the Guadalupe River.
The lease site, Camp Huaco Springs, is located between New Braunfels and Sattler and offers nearly half a mile of bank access along alternating pools and riffles. Anglers can fish from the gently sloped, rocky banks or wade upstream and downstream to take advantage of a low-water dam and a deep pool. Non-motorized boats, canoes, kayaks, and other floatable devices may also be launched for fishing.
“This lease location provides great bank angler access to river trout fishing coupled with gorgeous Guadalupe River scenery,” said Patrick Ireland, San Marcos and Austin District Supervisor for TPWD’s Inland Fisheries Division.
Public access at Camp Huaco Springs opens December 5 and will remain available through March 7, from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.
TPWD plans to stock this site and other sections of the Canyon Tailrace—downstream of Canyon Reservoir—with nearly 20,000 rainbow trout during weekly stockings from early December through late January. The effort includes 5,050 trout provided by the Water-Oriented Recreation District of Comal County (WORD). Stocking locations include Guadalupe Park below Canyon Dam, the third and fourth river crossings on River Road, and Camp Huaco Springs.
The Guadalupe River Trout Unlimited Chapter (GRTU), a TPWD partner, also contributes to stocking efforts during colder months, typically providing larger trout than TPWD’s stock. Anglers are encouraged to check the 2025–26 Trout Stocking Schedule online for dates and additional locations.
Camp Huaco Springs falls under statewide trout regulations, allowing anglers to keep up to five trout per day with no minimum length limit. A valid fishing license with a freshwater endorsement is required for anglers 17 years and older.
Other public access points along the Guadalupe River are also available, though special regulations apply beginning 800 yards downstream from the Canyon Dam release to the second bridge crossing on River Road.
Camp Huaco Springs is located at 4150 River Road in New Braunfels. More information about leased River Access and Conservation Areas (RACA) across Texas can be found on the TPWD RACA program website.
