Austin Water has marked the completion of the North Austin Reservoir and Pump Station, replacing the city’s oldest reservoir after more than a century of service. The new facility, located at 826 Old Koenig Lane in North Central Austin, features an 8‑million‑gallon reservoir and a pump station capable of delivering up to 50 million gallons of water per day.

The project strengthens reliability for Austin Water customers and is designed to serve the community well into the next century. The original reservoir, which had stood for 110 years, was demolished and rebuilt in the same location without service interruptions.
Assistant City Manager Mike Rogers described the effort as “an excellent example of how the City of Austin comes together to deliver on big projects with a collaborative, team approach.”
The North Austin Reservoir is one of 38 reservoirs in the city’s water distribution system, strategically placed to store drinking water and maintain service and pressure. The new pumping station and electrical facilities add resiliency and redundancy to the system.
Austin Water Director Shay Ralls Roalson noted that the project was completed a year ahead of schedule. “This project has modernized drinking water infrastructure in the heart of our city, further improving reliability for Austin Water’s customers,” Roalson said.
Funding for the project was partially provided through the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund, administered by the Texas Water Development Board with support from the Environmental Protection Agency.
As part of the announcement, Austin Water also reminded residents to prepare for winter weather. Recommendations include:
- Knowing the location of the water shut‑off valve.
- Insulating exposed pipes and water heaters.
- Turning off and draining outside faucets and sprinkler systems.
- Keeping an emergency water supply of one gallon per person per day for seven days.
Austin Water serves more than one million people across 548 square miles in the Austin metropolitan area, providing safe, reliable, and sustainable water and wastewater services.
